‘Massive’ Hurricane Irene Pounds Bahamas on Path Toward U.S.

Irene, a Category 3 hurricane and the strongest storm to threaten the U.S. since 2005, hit the Bahamas after gaining strength on a course that may take it near North Carolina this weekend and New England next week.
