Then why did the doj recover the almost 130000 bitcoins?

Why did the lubian bitcoin heist not succeed if the stolen bitcoin was from a chinese mining pool where like almost 130000 btcs were stolen? Why did the hackers not succeed? Why was the fbi able to recover it? Would have the hackers succeeded or not assuming they played their cards right?
