Prices for 3BRs are about 250k AED/year in Business Bay, about 300k AED/year in Downtown or about 150k AED/year in Damac Hills (far away), so I'd say 20k month is gets you a nice 3BR pretty much in every location (excluding palm and bluewater island, al barari and other ultra-lux locations). These are decent apartments. You can always rent twice as expensive in any of these locations.

Utilities should be around 4-5k AED/month (including housing, water, electricity, cooling, gas, internet/tv).

School prices average are up to about AED 30k/year per kid: Fees (2024 Tuition) so should be AED 60k/year or for two kids or about 5k/month.
That doesn't include additional costs (uniforms, transportation, excursions and other activities).

You can rent a family SUV like Nissan X-Trail/Toyota RAV4/VW Tiguan for less than 3k AED/month + another 500 for gas + Salik = 3.5k

So what do we have (I'll take maximum amounts):
Housing = 20k/month
Utilities = 5k/month
Schools = 5k/month
Car = 3.5k/month

The total: AED 33.5k/month or about $9k/month.

You would need to add health insurance, groceries, entertainment/eating out/travel but as I mentioned previously $10k is doable for a family that doesn't own a property.
Owning a property you would be looking at savings around 18k/month (2k would still go to service charge for 3br as when renting it's paid by landlord) in that case $5k/month would be a minimum.

The main thing in Dubai/UAE is to budget and stick to it as you can always go higher and burn more cash. A friend of my who is born and raised in UAE said to me once "In here it's very difficult to save money here as you can always buy nicer car, rent nicer apartment, buy nicer clothes etc". So you need to stay humble and frugal in a way (and that's quite the opposite of how people see Dubai in general) and you'll do just fine.  Last edited: Mar 6, 2024

The only way is from student visa to being exceptionally good at what you do and finding a company willing yo go through the pain with the department of labor of getting you an H1 then a million years later getting a green card. This option is however dead since the Trump presidency. Another option is being some sort of genius who can benefit the country or a top notch athlete who will probably be a world champion and get an EB1. The easiest way is marriage. So your friends might have lied to you lol

The exit tax is not for everyone: only those who had salaries of almost $200k/year in the last 5 years or those who have a net worth of $2M (Expatriation tax | Internal Revenue Service).

Also, the amount to be paid is capital gains with an exclusion amount of $821,000.

In other words, even if you have a 3M portfolio, it might not apply to you if capital gains fall below $821,000.

Even if those people you knew ignored this, the IRS probably checked their numbers and saw they didn't owe anything anyways.

It is evident from this: How will you invest Today , You have 1 Million Dollar to Invest ? that I was already "an adult" (for conscription purposes) in the early '80s. I don't doubt things are different nowadays. I can only speak of what I personally know from my experience and from what I witnessed.

I knew a "few guys" from the old guard in the '80s and '90s (who already passed away ) who NEVER paid a single dime to anyone. I can tell you from going to trial in Federal Court and State courts that NOBODY knows anything unless someone "sings", i.e., an informant carrying the prosecution.

Generally you want a place with first world standards (infrastructure) but looking at the geopolitical environment I wouldn’t rule out a partially deserted land mass (island) with substance (food/water).

Here in Asia I am too exposed due to the flight plans for a biowar - which is why it became the hot bed for Covid transiting through to the rest of the world.

Plenty of islands - problems is you are only a person or two removed from domestic flights to capital cities and have roughly 15m people in a 200sq mile radius.

What you need is a island with domestic shuttles to a larger island with infrequently flights so if something does occur you can cut off flights, and that larger island connection via major regional hubs, so you have a period of observation.

In addition you need to be able to be self sustaining (agriculture/water/energy - and means to fish).

Then you need something for bartering in a world without coms.

You also need to be in a place that rules out being called for service (so that rules out overseas territories for me).
